The Fall 1978 edition of The Goldfinch was entirely devoted to The Great Depression. In the opening article, Iowa historians chronicle how overproduction by farmers and factories, a carry-over from World War I, and increased land prices led to a serious collapse in farm prices. This crisis was the start of the Great Depression for Iowans, long before the widely known stock market crash of 1929.
