Date(s):
  • 1942-1945
Holding Location:
  • Des Moines
Format:
  • 1 bound volume (1 container)
Scope:
  • Bound volume containing samples of all forms, coupons, labels, and other identification materials used for World War II rationing efforts in Iowa under the authority of the United States Office of Price Administration (OPA). The materials were compiled by John R. Stromgren who served as an investigator for the OPA's district office in Des Moines. Stromgren's samples were sometimes used for reference by investigators in identifying forged coupons and stamps.

    During World War II the Iowa State Department of History and Archives wished to document wartime rationing efforts and put out a call for a complete set of items that were used locally to manage consumption of scarce resources. Stromgren presented his collection to the department and curator Ora Williams had it bound into a volume, prefaced with his history of the OPA and the wartime rationing program. Also included in the volume are John R. Stromgren's pencil sketches of Chester Bowles, a national administrator of the OPA, and Rae E. Walters and Walter D. Kline who were Iowa district directors.
