Scope:
  • Photographic postcards of Black residents of Buxton, Iowa, a Monroe County mining community established by the Consolidation Coal Company, and that existed from approximately 1900 to 1920. Buxton was notably an integrated town where Blacks and immigrants enjoyed equal opportunities in lifestyle and professional pursuits. Most individuals in the photographs are identified by name, with members of the Carter family prominently represented. Dr. Edward A. Carter was a physician and surgeon for the Consolidation Coal Company, and the first Black recipient of a medical degree from the State University of Iowa. The source of this collection was most likely a member of the Carter family.
