Date(s):
  • circa 1907-1913
Holding Location:
  • Des Moines
Creator/Author:
  • Peterson, Teckla, 1890-1942
Format:
  • 38 photographic and 17 lithographic postcards
Scope:
  • Photographic and lithographic postcard views of Iowa communities received by Teckla Peterson of Buxton, Iowa. Teckla was born in 1890 at Muchakinock, Iowa, to Swedish immigrants Gustav and Britta (Bretta) Peterson, and later moved with her family to the Buxton, Iowa, community. The 1910 census shows Gustav Peterson's occupation as farmer but he, or other family members, may have also been involved in work associated with the railroad and local coal mines. While Buxton was notable as a coal mining community that had a large Black population, there was a significant number of Swedish American residents that settled there in neighborhoods known as east and west Swede Town.

    The collection includes views of the following Iowa communities: Albia, Buxton, Chariton, Dexter, Hiteman, Iowa Falls, Lakonta (Truax), Lucas, Mediapolis, Ogden, Ottumwa, Red Oak, Stanton, and Stuart.
