Scope:
  • Photographs taken by and related to Robert E. Patten, a Black print shop owner and photographer of Buxton and Des Moines, Iowa. The collection includes portraits of family, friends, and clients; views of neighbors and residences in the Des Moines Center Street Black community; and group photos of organizations to which Robert and his wife Margaret belonged such as the Central Association of Colored Women, Hawkeye Lodge No. 160 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, St. Paul's African Methodist Episcopal Church, and the African American Masonic lodge and Eastern Star auxiliary.
