Scope:
  • This collection contains correspondence of Byron W. Hamilton. He served with the 54th Regiment in World War I and gained the rank of Sergeant by 1918. When he returned to Iowa, hamilton married Nora Hosler in September of 1919. The had 5 children. Hamilton enlisted again for World War II when he was 50 years old. He served as a Captain in the 1st European Civil Affairs Regiment (ECAR). Hamilton was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his service in WWI.

    The letters in this collection are primarily between Byron W. Hamilton and Nora Hosler throughout his training and service during both WWI and WWII. The collection also includes a small number of letters from Byron to his mother, Eva Black, while he was stationed on the Mexican border in 1916.
