Abstract:
  • Grasshopper plagues devasted northwest Iowa in 1873 and 1874. It was not until the end of the Civil War that large numbers of settlers, including Union veterans, arrived in the area. Invading grasshoppers soon destroyed their crops and almost everything else in their path threatening the very existence of the new arrivals. Adjutant General Nathaniel B. Baker took the lead in a statewide effort to provide disaster assistance; this includes numerous accounts of the disaster and documents relief efforts.
