    Donated in 1899 by Joseph Smith III of Lamoni, Decautur County.

    Born at Sharon, Vermont, December 23, 1805. Founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as Mormonism. Founded city of Zion and temple of Zion at present-day Independence, Missouri in 1827. Removed to Nauvoo, Illinois. The first conference of the Mormon Church was held in 1830 when Smith is said to have performed a miracle. Tarred and feathered by a mob in Kirtland, Ohio, the site of an LDS temple, on March 24, 1832. Settlement in Nauvoo, Illinios was founded in 1840. Chief Keokuk visited Smith at Nauvoo. Smith was murdered in Carthage, Illinois jail, June 27, 1844.
