  • 1st Iowa or 60th US Flag
Description:
  • Flag, American Civil War, 1st Colored Regiment of Iowa/U.S. 60th of African Descent; 60th USCT; patterned after a U.S. national flag. Silk with hand painted canton, machine and hand sewn. Canton is decorated with a "Grant's screaming eagle" at center. A red unit ID ribbon partially circles the eagle and reads: 1st COLORED REGT. IOWA. A ring of 23, 5-pointed, gold colored stars circles around eagle/unit ID.

    These regiments were sometimes referred to as United States Colored Troops USCT. Flag was made by African-American women from Keokuk and Muscatine.

    B. STAFF:
    The staff is wood, cylindrical, tappers to each end, stained dark brown, not varnished and has a slight warp.

    C. ACCESSORIES:
    Has brass finial and finial connector.

    HISTORY:
    Mustered into the service of the United States at Keokuk, Iowa, and Benton Barracks (St. Louis), Mo., of dates ranging from Oct. 11, 1863, to December 4, 1863, by Lieutenant Colonel William N. Grier and Colonel B. L. E. Bonneville, United States Army. Mustered out of service October 15, 1865 at Devall's Bluff, Arkansas.
