Title:
  • Chief Keokuk (The Watchful Fox)
Description:
  • Chief Keokuk (The Watchful Fox) by George Upp. Full length portrait of a Native American Chief standing and pointing left; he wears beaded buckskin clothing, a bear claw necklace, moccasins, a red headdress, a red and black shawl, a necklace, and is holding a pipe. Background is landscape. Gilded frame. 86.5 x 59 inches.

Chief Keokuk, 1780-1848, belonged to the Fox clan of the Sauk. He participated in the War of 1812, and was also known as an orator and diplomat. Keokuk worked to negotiate treaties with the US government to keep peace between the Sauk and Meskwaki tribes and white settlers. These negotiations, his accommodations of the federal government, and sale of lands caused discord among the tribes. In 1842, Keokuk sold the last of the tribal land in Iowa and removed to Kansas. He died in 1848.

Donated 1904 by James C. Davis.
