This is one of thousands of segments of "The Ribbon" tied together in a ten mile encircling the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and other buildings around the city.\~ It was accomplished on August 4, 1985, the fortieth anniversary of the atomic bombings of Japan during World War II. The inspiration, from Justine Merritt, was to have people design pillow-case size segments like this designed with the theme of "What I cannot bear to think of as lost forever in a nuclear war." \~This was part of the nuclear freeze campaign of the 1980s. \~Participants came from all over the world, including a number from Iowa. \~Each segment has four ties in each corner to be attached to make the circle.
