  • Medical bag of Dr. Edward A. Carter (1881-), an African-American doctor of Buxton, Monroe County/Mahaska County. Bag contains compounds and pills stored in glass vials, 28 vials in total. 6 x 3.75 x 11.5 inches

    Dr. Carter was one of the primary physicians and a prominent resident of Buxton. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School, attended the University of Iowa, and was the first African-American graduate of the university's medical college. He completed his medical degree in 1907. Following World War I and the closure of the Buxton mines Carter relocated to Detroit, Michigan.

    Photographs of Dr. Carter as a student at the University of Iowa and living in Buxton are in Special Collections-Des Moines.

    Presented September 9, 1963. Donated to the Iowa Department of History and Archives by Miss Marion Carter, daughter of Dr. Carter. Ms. Carter was a teacher of Library Science in the Detroit Public Schools. Correspondence, etc in Special Collections/State Archives.
