  • Uniform jacket, olive wool, single breasted, 4 pockets, gold-tone buttons (some tarnish), lieutenant bar on lower sleeve. Round patch top left sleeve - silhouette of buffalo on white background, red and light blue rings. Metal "US" pins on left and right collar, crossed rifles pin on right collar (Infantry). Made by Belle Jardiniere, Paris France. Worn by donor's grandfather, 2nd Lieutenant James B. Morris (October 15,1890-December 30, 1977) during World War 1914-1918. 27.5 inches long.

    2nd Lieutenant Morris was a resident of Des Moines, Polk County who trained at Fort Des Moines in the summer of 1917 with the first group of African-American officers. He served in France and was wounded in action in the fall of 1918. He was trained as a lawyer and later published the Iowa Bystander, Iowa's African-American newspaper.
