Biographical/Historical note:
  • The Iowa State Federation of Afro-American Women's Clubs was organized in 1902 by a group of black women representing women's clubs from 5 Iowa cities. The following year 15 clubs were represented at a meeting to draw up a constitution for an organization that would serve as an umbrella over individual clubs for African American women across Iowa. In 1910 the group changed its name to the Iowa Federation of Colored Women's Clubs to conform with the name of the National Association of Colored Women. In 1913 the group was formally incorporated and consisted of 35 member clubs in 13 cities with a membership of nearly 600. The group changed its name several more times: Iowa Association of Colored Women (1935); Iowa Association of Club Women (1956); and Iowa Association of Colored Women's Clubs, Inc. (1958). The organization's peak membership year was 1917 when it boasted nearly 800 members representing more than 40 clubs. By the 1960s the womens club movement in general was diminishing and membership in the Iowa Association of Colored Women's Clubs reflected this trend. By 2002, the group's century year, the association was comprised of 4 clubs from Cedar Rapids, Des Moines and Davenport. Throughout its history the individual clubs pursued a wide array of activities including educational, social, philanthropic and cultural endeavors. The federation's annual conventions held in communities throughout the state kept everyone informed of the individual club projects and activities. Booklets produced in association with these conventions generally included a list of local clubs and statistical reports of activities. Sue M. Wilson Brown who was especially active in statewide organizational efforts authored many of the statewide organizer reports in the collection.
