Biographical/Historical note:
  • David Crawford was the first of 10 children born to Theophilus and Annis Crawford of Putney, Vermont. The Crawford family were prominent Putney residents involved in various endeavors including farming, milling and dairying. David Crawford was one of the country's first successful sheep breeders. The family's tenth child, Theophilus Crawford, moved to the Iowa Territory in the late 1830s where he took up farming. Representing Dubuque County, Theophilus was a member of the 1844 Iowa Constitutional Convention and served in the Iowa legislature in 1846, 1857 and 1875.
