Biographical/Historical note:
  • Iowa author, and Des Moines Capital associate editor, Emilie Blackmore Stapp organized the "Go-Hawks Happy Tribe" as a service and character building club for children in Des Moines in 1914. Based on her book "The Trail of the Go-Hawks", the club expanded nationwide during the early years of World War I and raised money to help Belgian and French war orphans. In June 1917 Stapp began the club's million penny drive and succeeded in raising one million pennies by Mother's Day, 1918. After the War the Go-Hawks raised money for domestic charities and collected books for libraries in Europe.
