Title:
  • Cowles Broadcasting Company radio advertising collection, 1945.
Summary note:
  • This is a collection of advertising and marketing materials created by the Katz Agency (New York City) in 1945 for the Des Moines-based Cowles Broadcasting Group, and primarily intended to attract sponsors for programs carried by member radio stations KRNT (Des Moines), WNAX (Yankton, SD and Sioux City, IA), WHOM (New York City), WCOP (Boston) and, WOL (Washington, D.C.). Included are tear sheets (advertisements) from broadcasting trade magazines and other publications, weekly program schedules for the stations, and ephemera created to highlight specific radio personalities and promotional events. In the weekly broadcast schedules researchers can find evidence of patriotic programming that aired in the final year of the second world war. The materials related to WNAX reflect that station's strong emphasis on serving the midwest farmer. A general finding aid exists for the collection as a whole, and an itemized inventory of content has been prepared for radio stations KRNT and WNAX.
Source of Acquisition:
  • Donated by Jack Lufkin, 2017.
Biographical/Historical note:
  • The Cowles Broadcasting Company was founded in 1928 by Gardner Cowles, Sr. of Des Moines as an adjunct to the family's publications company which owned the Des Moines Register and Tribune and other midwest newspapers. His son Gardner (Mike) Cowles, Jr. was primarily responsible for the radio side of the family media operations which by the 1940s included stations KRNT (Des Moines, Iowa), WNAX (Yankton, S.D. and Sioux City, Iowa), WHOM (New York City), WCOP (Boston), and WOL (Washington, D.C.). The Katz Agency of New York City was the advertising firm that represented the Cowles Broadcasting Group in the 1940s.
