  • Collection consists of newsletters with hometown news prepared by the Iowa Falls Civilian Defense Committee on Soldier Morale and received by Capt. Roberts during his World War II service in the Army Air Corps; a signed copy of his 1999 recollections: The Flashing Green Light: A Pilot's View of World War II; and an autographed copy of War on the Homefront: WWII Stories and Letters of Soldiers and Families from Hardin County (2001).

Biographical/Historical note:
  • Capt. Darrah Robert of rural Alden, Iowa graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1940. In 1942 he took tests for admission as an aviation cadet in the U.S. Army Corps. Following flight training at airfields in Texas he received his assignment as a troop carrier pilot and received specialized instruction with the C-47 carrier plane at Sedalia Army Air Field in Missouri. He went overseas in 1944 and was assigned to the 437th Troop Carrier Group based out of Ramsbury, England. Shortly after VE-Day he served on General Dwight D. Eisenhower's staff as a part of the 320th Transport Squadron at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force in Frankfurt, Germany and was briefly assigned to the 359th Fighter Group before his return to the U.S. in November 1945.
