Summary note:
  • Volume one in the collection contains letters sent between June 23, 1840 and August 5, 1847 by agent John Beach of the Iowa Sac and Fox Agency to T. Hartley Crawford (Commissioner of Indian Affairs), Joshua Pilcher (Superintendent of Indian Affairs in St. Louis), the governor of Iowa, military officers, other agents, employees, treasury official and other. Volume 1A is the letter book of Agent Perry Fuller and includes 16 pages of accounts as well as letters (1849-1861) to A.B. Greenwood (Commissioner of Indian Affairs), A.M. Robinson (Superintendent of Indian Affairs at St. Joseph, Mo.), Charles E. Mix (acting Commissioner of Indian Affairs), and William P. Dole (Commissioner of Indian Affairs). The final volume (volume 2) contains copies of letters and other documents sent by Agent John H. Pickering and Clerk C.C. Pickett to the commissioner and superintendent of Indian Affairs and others. Volume 2 includes an index.

Biographical/Historical note:
  • In 1851 the Central Superintendency replaced the St. Louis Superintendency and the Osage River Agency was divided. A new Sac and Fox Agency was made responsible for the Sauk and Fox, Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. The Shawnee Agency in Oklahoma was established in 1901 and in 1919 the Sac and Fox Agency was consolidated with the Shawnee Agency.
